1. Introduction

This procedure details the process for Social Workers in Children's Specialist Services and the Department of Adult Social Services to follow when passing information or referring a case to the Emergency Duty Team.

2. Contacting EDT

Contact number: 0151 677 6557 / 0151 677 5372

Email: edt@wirral.gov.uk

The Emergency Duty Team (EDT) is an emergency team which can only provide a response to risks to children and adults.

In the first instance referrers must liaise with their Line Manager where possible before making a referral to EDT.

It is essential to liaise directly with an EDT Duty Officer so that the request can be considered. Requests not discussed cannot guarantee an EDT response.

EDT lines can be extremely busy. When staff have difficulty getting through to EDT to discuss their request they can contact EDT by pager: 07623605131.

3. Information and Referral by Email / Fax

All referrals/information must be sent by fax or email using the required Emergency Duty Referral Form. See Appendix 1: Emergency Duty Team Referral Form.

All referrers must phone and check the information has been received as EDT cannot guarantee that a fax/email has arrived.

EDT staff will:

  • Check the group email and the fax regularly whilst on their shift;
  • Transfer details from the form to SWIFT/ICS;
  • Launch actions and information on SWIFT/ICS;
  • Use email exceptionally on a 'needs must' basis.

Home contact number

Staff time off work will be respected; however there are times when EDT may need to contact staff at home to ensure a consistent response to planning in complex situations. Therefore EDT will request staff provide an Out of Hours contact number.
